The Fike High womens varsity basketball team volted to 7-0 with the help from the “dynamic duo” EJ Proctor and Jamika Ruffin. The lead got has big as 33-15 at half and the final was 56-39. Jamika Ruffin added 13 while Proctor netted 16 for the lady Demons. “We knew we had to come out intense,” commented Ruffin, who tossed in 13 points. “We ran our press-breaker and played intense. We played very well; everything clicked. The defense was intense, and everybody moved their feet.” Proctor’s 16 points led Fike, while senior Shatera Black managed 10 points. Southern Wayne was led by Zavic Atkins with 16 points. Ruffin assured the Lady Demons are pleased with their undefeated status — but not surprised. “We have a lot of talent,” she reasoned. “We just have to click together and play hard. “We know that it’s going to get tougher in the (3-A Big East) conference, and we are being humble about it.” Speaking of getting tougher, Fike’s next test comes against archrival Hunt in the semifinals of the Farris & Farris Holiday Tournament on Wednesday, Dec. 26, in the Beddingfield High gym. “They knocked us out last year, and it’s kind of a grudge thing,” Ruffin said.
