Evans- Champion at last

Maya Evans had quite a day.  Evans left Winston Salem with not only a championship of her own, but a record.  Maya won the 500 m race in 1 minute and 16.5 seconds.  This also set a new 1A/2A/3A state meet record.  Evans recorded a better time of 1 minute and 15 seconds earlier in the season at Rocky Mount.  “That’s why I was very surprised, it wasn’t my best time,” said Evans.  Maya is the first Golden Demons to win a state championship in the indoor track since Sabrina Thompson in 1996.  “I was in front the whole time and we probably had about 100 meters left and the second-place girl started to run up on me,” said Evans.  “I thought, ‘No, I’ve come too far for this!’” Evans recalled.  “Definitely the indoor track is harder because the curve is tighter and you have a shorter straightaway,” she said.  The state title comes a year after she finished third in the event at the 2012 championships and is Evans’ first overall.  “I wanted to make everyone proud and I knew I couldn’t let them down. I couldn’t let myself down,” she said.
