Fike Boys Drop Two in Triangle Tip-Off

The Fike High Varsity boys basketball team went tallied a 0-2 record in the fourth annual Triangle Tip-Off tournament.  The Golden Demons fell 75-44 to East Chapel Hill in the consolation game.  Fike dropped to 0-2 as they dropped to tournament host Knightdale on Friday, 95-58.  “We didn’t do a very good job rebounding,â€? Fike head coach Brent Secrest lamented. “They got a lot of second and third shots. You give a team that good that many shots, they’re going to convert every time. And we’re just not a very good shooting team right now.   “We’re a poor shooting team, we’ve got to work on that. We don’t communicate well on defense, we’re going to work on that and we don’t rebound well.   “We’re going to work on that. It’s all things that we can fix, it’s all things we can get better at in practice and we plan on doing that. Hopefully these last two games have been a learning experience and we can build on that.â€?  Senior guard Sam Ellis was the only Fike player in double digits.  He tallied 11 of his 16 points in the first half.  He gave the Demons an early 3-2 lead with a 3-pointer and Fike continued to hold a 7-3 edge with the help of Trevon Virgil’s jumper.  Fike struggled to score at the beginning of the second half, scoring on just two field goals.  The Demons got outscored 22-6 in the third quarter.  In the process, the Demons struggled putting the ball in the basket, best summarized with just under 3 minutes remaining in the third quarter.  “They got us at our own game,â€? Secrest said. “That’s what we try to preach in practice is transition, transition at both ends of the floor and we just didn’t do a very good job of getting back.â€?  Fike showed life as the fourth quarter opened, scoring a 9-0 run that brought East Chapel Hill’s coach off the bench for a timeout and Fike trailing 56-39. However, Fike drew no closer, as East Chapel Hill ended the game on a 19-5 run. The final 31-point margin was the largest of the game.
