Fike’s Champion Signs with South Carolina

Fike’s champion, Maya Evans, chooses to be a Gamecock next fall.  Evans had all the choices she could imagine, but South Carolina was the choice for her.  “It was so hard of a process,” Evans said. “The process of eliminating schools is a lot of work and a lot of pressure. I prayed a lot and I think I made the right choice.”  Evans, who got most of her full ride paid for with academic money, has an unweighted GPA of 4.0 Coach West said. She chose the Gamecocks of the Southeastern Conference over Temple, Cornell, North Carolina, N.C. State, Clemson, North Carolina A&T, UNC-Wilmington and Michigan State.  “It’s a relief,” Evans said smiling. “I knew South Carolina was right for me instantly. I got there and it felt like a new family and a bunch of new friends. I felt like I belong. It wasn’t that way at other schools.”  Early in her running career, Maya thought asthma would crush her bright future.  With the push from her dad, it never happened.  “When I was little, my dad and I used to go running,” she said. “And I distinctly remember the first time I had an asthma attack while running. I was scared, but he made me keep going. He’s always tried to push me to overcome obstacles and not be afraid.”   Stacey Evans lights up when talking about his daughter’s voyage from those early days of struggling to finish a neighborhood run to today as a North Carolina high school state champion.  “I honestly didn’t know how well she’d do when she started,” the father said. “At first, we had to keep an inhaler nearby at all times. But she’s matured through it all. And it’s not a problem at all anymore. It took a lot of prayer and a lot of hard work.”  “I’m kind of nervous, but excited at the same time,” Maya said. “The SEC is the big sports conference, it’s the best. It’s going to take a lot of motivation and a lot of determination. I know it will be hard, but I will be doing it not only for me, but my family and for God.”
